Small-Town Living, Online Counselling, and Access to Mental Health Support

Whenever I cross over to the Sunshine Coast, I notice something shift.

My shoulders drop. My breathing slows. The constant rush of everyday life seems to soften.

I spend a lot of time just outside of Gibsons, BC, and one of the things I love most is the feeling of connection; to nature, to community, and to a pace of life that feels a little more human. There is something calming about seeing familiar faces, spending time near the ocean, and being surrounded by forests and mountains.

It's easy to understand why so many people choose to live in smaller communities.

The more time I spend on the Sunshine Coast, the more I appreciate both the beauty of small-town living and some of its challenges. It's one of the reasons I chose to build a virtual counselling practice. While many rural and remote communities offer an incredible quality of life, accessing mental health support isn't always straightforward.

For some people, counselling can involve long travel distances, ferry rides, limited local options, lengthy waitlists, or concerns about privacy. In smaller communities, simply walking into a counselling office can feel uncomfortable when "everybody knows everybody."

Online counselling has helped change that.

Many people are initially skeptical about meeting with a counsellor online and wonder whether it will feel as personal, connected, or effective as in-person therapy. In reality, many clients are surprised by how comfortable and natural the experience feels. You can read more about that in our article, Why Online Counselling Feels Better Than Many People Expect.

For many people, online counselling also provides greater consistency. Life still happens, roads still get icy, ferries get cancelled, kids get sick, and work schedules shift, but support can remain accessible through it all.

At Advance Counselling, we provide secure online counselling for youth, adults, couples, and families across Western and Northern Canada, including rural and underserved communities. Whether you live in a remote northern community, on an island, in a small town, or simply prefer the convenience of meeting from home, support is available wherever you are.
